About ACLU of West Virginia

Established in 1920, the ACLU-WV is a non-partisan, non-profit public interest organization dedicated to protecting and expanding civil liberties for all people in West Virginia. Today, our mission remains as relevant and important as ever, given the policies being pursued in Charleston and across the nation. Confronting both traditional and new threats to civil liberties on many fronts, a major focus of our work is to extend the promise of the Bill of Rights to those groups that have traditionally been denied its protections, and expanding the reach of its guarantees to new areas. We accomplish our goals through litigation, advocacy, public education, and grassroots organizing.

About the Opportunity

Over the last few years, as West Virginian’s civil liberties have been increasingly threatened, our organization has grown significantly to become a key presence in the state’s non-profit landscape. We are deeply proud of and inspired by our relationships and collaboration with all of our community partners and coalitions, including organizing the first annual Appalachian Queer Youth Summit and the first BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and persons of color) student convening, joining forces with other affiliates to protect the rights of fair wages for incarcerated people, our work in immigrants rights, and taking on legal battles to protect transgender youth.

We are seeking an Executive Director who brings a track record of leading organizations and managing teams, effectively builds culture and community, has working knowledge of civil liberties issues and policies, and is committed to practicing self reflection and principles of equity, inclusion and belonging in their leadership. The Executive Director serves as a powerful and courageous spokesperson for our mission, communities and campaigns, and sets the vision and strategy for advancing our work throughout the state, especially in areas and communities we haven’t reached before. Through building trust and relationships with constituents with communities across the state, as well as the individuals within the organization, the Executive Director engages the board and leads a dedicated and passionate team of eighteen, to bring together, champion and expand our advocacy, legislative, and community engagement work.

Reporting and Structure

The ACLU-WV is composed of both a 501(c)(4) (the “Union”) and a 501(c)(3) (the “Foundation”). The separate non-profit entities share the same overall mission, office space, and employees. Both are governed by boards of directors. The operating budgets of the ACLU-WV and the ACLU-WV Foundation, if totaled, are in excess of $2 million. The Executive Director reports to the Boards of Directors of the two corporate entities of the ACLU-WV, and ensures that the organization is fiscally sound and that its litigation, advocacy, fundraising, and communications programs are meeting the current and emergent needs and interests of its constituents.

The ACLU-WV is a proudly unionized workplace that values the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, and strives to be a workplace where team members feel safe, valued, supported, and can thrive.
