After seven months of work on an ordinance creating the Morgantown Civilian Review and Advisory Board, the bill is scheduled to be introduced to the council at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Police review boards are proactive ways for the public to gain input and provide oversight of law enforcement. They strengthen trust between law enforcement and the communities they police.

But there are some misconceptions about these boards and how they work. Here’s what you need to know.

A Civilian Review Board is a proactive way to provide community oversight and input on law enforcement.   There are many misconceptions about  a proposed board in Morgantown.   Here's what you need  to know.

Myth: Police officers will  be afraid to do their jobs if Morgantown adopts a Civilian Review Board.   Fact: Civilian Review  Boards build trust between police and the community. Law enforcement draws its credibility from the public’s support.

Review boards are too new and untested. Morgantown would be along in adopting one. Fact: More than 100 jurisdictions in the US have adopted a review board

Myth: The review board will have the power to discipline an dfire police. Fact: The review board will onle be able to make recommendations, adding another layer of checks and balances to law enforcement.

Myth: Police have had no involvement in the process. Fact; The FOP and members of MP have attended special meetings throughout the process.
