Tell us a little bit about your background.
I am a native West Virginian, born in raised in Grafton (Taylor County). Growing up, I learned a great deal of the importance of being humble and being willing to fight for others. I have been blessed beyond measure in my life and believe that I am called to do what I can to use my privilege and skills to help break down barriers that limit so many from reaching their fullest potential. I am a History and Political Science major at Fairmont State University and am also minoring in Women & Gender Studies. I am incredibly passionate about social justice and see an intersectionality to many of the challenges our society faces in terms of racial, economic, environmental, and reproductive justice to name a few. During my time in college, I have been an outspoken advocate on campus and within the community for better policies, transparency, and accountability.
What about the ACLU of WV’s mission most resonates with you?
What resonates the most with me about the ACLU of WV’s mission is the fact that this organization is a fighter for the common man. The battles that this organization wages on the behalf of people, especially those who have long been marginalized, is inspiring and is why—even as a young boy—I have always been interested in the work the ACLU does. I am also inspired by the organization’s longstanding commitment to standing up for people’s rights—even when it is viewed by many as unpopular and controversial.
What are you most looking forward to about this internship?
I am looking forward most to working with an incredible group of passionate people that strive tirelessly to make a difference in our state. Furthermore, I am excited to gain skills and experiences that will allow me to be a better advocate and organizer within my community. This is an incredible opportunity and I am so humbled to be part of this organization.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy taking advantage of opportunities that allow me to learn and grow as a person, whether that be by traveling, talking to a friend or stranger, reading, or using media that is readily accessible. I also enjoy taking walks in nature and taking care of my pet bunny, Zuko.
