Tiara Rowe (she/her) was recently named a Joseph Cohen Equity and Justice Fellow for 2023. We sat down with Tiara to learn more about her.

Hi Tiara! Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi there, I'm Tiara Rowe. I come from Brooklyn, New York and am a first-generation student with six siblings. I recently earned my Bachelor's degree in Political Science from West Virginia University, focusing on law and legal studies. I'm proud to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and have held various leadership positions within the organization. Additionally, I was formerly a member of both the Women in Law Club and the West Virginia Law and Economic Club. My passion lies in fighting for freedom and I've had the privilege of being mentored by Barbara Littles, Esq. When I'm not busy with my work, I enjoy staying fit and advocating for mental health.

What are you most looking forward to about this position with ACLU-WV?

I am thrilled to be part of the West Virginia ACLU fellowship this summer. Through this program, I aim to learn about the social injustice and inequalities that exist within the Appalachian community. I am also looking forward to meeting fellow freedom fighters and LGBTQIA advocates. As a member of the community and a minority myself, I believe I can not only gain valuable insights but also contribute my thoughts to the cause.

What issues will you be working on?

In my position as a fellow this summer, I have been entrusted with the important task of planning and coordinating various events for both the ACLU-WV team and the LGBTQIA Summer Camp. The responsibility of representing my team and facilitating meaningful connections with others is a privilege I am excited to undertake. Additionally, I am eager to take on a leadership role when needed while maintaining a spirit of collaboration with my colleagues throughout the planning process.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I prioritize my physical and mental health through various activities, including working out and researching self-development. I find that exercise not only improves my physical health but also enhances my mood and overall well-being. Additionally, I enjoy reading books and articles on personal growth and development, as it allows me to continuously learn and improve myself. I believe that investing in myself in these ways ultimately benefits not only me but also those around me, as I am better equipped to contribute positively to society.
