With the U.S. Supreme Court on the cusp of issuing a historic ruling on the freedom to marry for same-sex couples,it is mindboggling that there is still no federal law that explicitly protects LGBT students from discrimination in our public schools. Too often, students who are lesbian, gay or bisexual are prohibited from bringing a same-sex date to prom. Too often, transgender students are forced to use restrooms that do not reflect who they are.
These students deserve better. Lend your voice and call on Senator Capito to vote YES on the Students Non-Discrimination Act.
In the coming days, the U.S. Senate will vote on long overdue protections for LGBT students in public schools across the country. Senator Capito will cast one of the key deciding votes on this measure.
The need for these protections could not be clearer. A recent national survey of thousands of LGBT youth found a majority reporting that they felt unsafe at school based on who they are. Even more disturbingly, of those students who had the courage to report instances of harassment to school staff, six in 10 said nothing was done in response.
This is unacceptable.
Please urge Senator Capito to support explicit protections for LGBT students under federal law.
