Carrie Ware joined our staff in April after years of helping people who are unhoused and people who living with addiction. We recently sat down with her to learn more about what drives her to work for a more just Mountain State.

Tell us a little about your background

I was born in Fairmont and I earned my bachelor’s degree at Fairmont State University. In 2012, I moved to Huntington and later I began my nonprofit career working with food-insecure people throughout West Virginia. My exposure to massive amounts of poverty opened my eyes to the problems with homelessness and drug addiction that plagued the Tristate Area. My experience in finance and grant writing opened the door to transition to working as chief financial officer for a large recovery program in Huntington.

What about the ACLU of West Virginia mission most resonates with you?

What I respect most about working for the ACLU is their commitment to values. The ACLU supports all marginalized persons from all walks of life. This organization gives a powerful voice to those outside of the majority who must have allies to amplify their voice. We strive to be their ally. I am very excited to be a part of that team.

What are you most looking forward to about being Director of Finance for ACLU of WV?

I look forward to supporting our team in all aspects of the work we do. I'm excited to have a strong and experienced financial background to support and strengthen the work.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy spending time with my three children and volunteering at my local church parish with our family.  Our parish does a variety of volunteer work including distributing bags to those living unsheltered, doing cleanup in homeless camps, and feeding within the community. I also enjoy reading and learning about great women leaders who have paved the way for professional women like myself.
