Yesterday, Rep. Riley Moore posted photos of himself giving a thumbs up in front of imprisoned people at CECOT, an El Salvador prison notorious for human rights violations. The Trump administration has deported hundreds of immigrants without due process to CECOT, some by mistake. Moore also praised President Trump's handling of immigration in the post.
ACLU-WV issued the following statement in response:
Rep. Moore’s actions reflect a depraved contempt for the United States Constitution and the rule of law. If he cannot uphold the oath he swore to defend the Constitution, which guarantees due process for every person in the United States whether they are citizens or not, then he does not belong in Congress.
We call on West Virginians to contact Moore’s office and demand he commit to:
- Bring back any person wrongfully removed from the country.
- Demand that the government be required to prove its accusations of anyone they arrest and imprison.
- Disavow the use of cruel and unusual punishment at CECOT and everywhere.
